<image:title>Videos - Cathedral’s Cridge Wins National Title</image:title>
<image:caption>Posted 10:16 AM, August 28, 2018, by Larra Overton Cathedral sophomore Gillian Cridge was first to break the tape at the USA Triathlon Junior National Championships earlier this month, but she is already setting her sights on chasing her next title.. “In September, I will compete in the Junior World Championships,” Gillian said of the event which will be held in Australia. “I really enjoy being able to push myself and set my own goals and know my own limits. Then I am able to see how hard I can push myself and how good I can be.” Mastering the three disciplines of the triathlon means a grueling training schedule, often at Fort Benjamin Harrison State Park near the Cathedral campus. “Monday through Friday, I am usually up by 5:30, 5:45 getting in my first workout before school. Then I go to school from 8:50 to 3:10 and then right after school I will try to get in, sometimes it’s just one workout, usually it’s two workouts, and then I will go home, eat, get my homework done and go to bed and start over the next day,” the 16-year-old said with a smile. Gillian’s two-a-day workouts means she has those early morning training sessions, so Cathedral accommodates that by allowing her a later start to the school day. They also allow her additional absences to accommodate her competition schedule. “Without them granting me late arrival, I would not be able to get all my training in and I would be up later and I probably would not be able to have the success that I do.” While she already claimed a runner-up finish in international competition this summer in Brazil, Gillian looks to keep climbing the ranks at September’s Youth Junior World Championship. “I’m really excited because I haven’t raced all these girls before and I am interested to see where I fall. I am only race age 17, so I still have two more years, so being able to get the opportunity as a 17-year-old to go and race 19-year-olds is just crazy.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Videos - IU football embodies ‘Love Each Other’ Philosophy In Support of Student Manager in Cancer Battle</image:title>
<image:caption>Posted 4:45 PM, August 29, 2018, by Larra Overton, Updated at 09:43PM, August 29, 2018 Returning to Memorial Stadium and to his role as a manager for the IU football team is something Matt Stauder isn’t taking for granted. “I drove my mom crazy this summer, I told her, ‘All that I am worried about is if I am going to be back here for football,” the IU senior admitted. This spring, the senior from Westfield was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. When he underwent surgery, his Hoosiers were there to show support, IU assistant and running backs coach Mike Hart was even by his hospital bedside. Running back Ricky Brookins took the lead on starting a GoFundMe campaign to help Matt with his medical costs, generating more than $23,000 in donations. “There were even players from other teams sending donations and messaging us saying, ‘It’s deeper than football,” Brookins explained. “I’m like, that’s what this game is all about just the community and it builds a brotherhood regardless of where you go.” "The fact he would do something like that for me meant so much to my family and I,” Stauder said of Brookins’ initiative. "As soon as I got back here July 31 I told them, 'I'm ready to go, whatever I can do let me know, I want to pay my gratitude.'" Matt is grateful to be back not only to open a new season with his guys but to also have their support of his teammates after losing his father suddenly last year. "The one-year anniversary of his passing is actually this Saturday when we are in Miami for the FIU game. I know during this tough weekend they will definitely come around me and make sure that I am feeling good,” Stauder said of IU’a season opener at Florida International. LEO is the motto of the Indiana Hoosiers football program. Tom Allen established that "Love Each Other" mentality ahead of his first season as head coach last year, and there's been no greater demonstration of how the program has embraced that love each other attitude than the outpouring of support for Matt Stauder. "LEO is everything what Coach Allen says love each other, you can see it here from not even just my running back group any other player on the team,” the sports management and marketing major explained. "I think that shows our team is more than just a team, we are literally brothers in and out of football and I think that just shows that,” Brookins added. Matt will make the trip from Bloomington to Indy for three more treatments in the coming weeks, and has a message for anyone else battling through a similar struggle. "If you do everything the doctor tells you to and you maintain a great attitude throughout the whole thing and keep a strong faith, you can prosper and rise above it."</image:caption>

<image:title>Videos - Brownsburg’s Tyrone Griffin Returns for Final Rivalry Game vs. Avon After Illness Left Him Fighting For His Life</image:title>
<image:caption>Posted 4:49 PM, September 7, 2018, by Larra Overton, Updated at 07:32PM, September 7, 2018 Brownsburg - This time last year, Tyrone Griffin was fighting a much greater opponent than any he'd faced on the football field. He was fighting for his life. "To be honest, I thought that I was going to die,” Tyrone said. The linebacker was a consistent playmaker for the Bulldogs early last season, but on the Saturday before the battle against one of their biggest rivals he experienced pain that brought him to tears. "It felt like my head was caving in,” the Brownsburg senior explained. “I couldn't really describe like the thumping sounds that I felt in my head." His mom rushed him to the hospital then he was taken by medical helicopter to a second, in search of answers. "When I first saw him, he was full comatose; he was in a full coma,” Brownsburg head coach John Hart said. "They went through concussion, they went through aneurism. I think that was the prevailing thing, they thought he had an aneurism and was possibly going to die." Doctors could only describe it as a mysterious virus, similar to bacterial meningitis that kept Tyrone in the hospital for two weeks. "When I woke up all I could see was love and family,” Tryone explained. “On my phone, I was getting calls from my teammates, texts, and it really showed me who was there for me and how much of a support system I have." And Tyrone stayed connected from the hospital, as his team prepared for that rivalry game against Avon. "We have this app called ‘Huddle’ that we watch our plays on to study and stuff and I was looking at that making sure that if I did have an opportunity, I’d be ready." Tyrone made it back by the end of the season, but not at full strength. This year, his senior year, he’s ready for the rivalry and isn't taking anything for granted. "This gives me a lot of perspective just having an opportunity to play football...make sure there's no opportunity wasted because you never know when the opportunity might be taken from you." Tyrone also serves as an athletic ambassador at Brownsburg, mentoring elementary students and sharing his story in the community. He is also committed to continuing his football career next fall at Indiana State University.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Posted 4:46 PM, August 30, 2018, by Larra Overton Fishers running back HL Lewis was awarded the Shelbourne Knee Center Play of the Week honors for week two of the high school football season. The senior’s 69-yard rushing touchdown in the Tigers’ 31-14 victory over Pike. "Once my line got the push they needed, I saw the green all the way to the endzone and just made it happen," Lewis told Fox59's Larra Overton. When Lewis' nomination was announced on Twitter, Lewis said the nomination should be given to his offensive line. When he was awarded the Play of the Week honor, he shared the nod with his linemen, saying, "They did all the work. I just saw the holes, saw the field and just ran." Should give the nomination to My O-Line but make sure everyone goes and votes! https://t.co/ZjrQbEjbMe — HL Lewis II (@HLewis_2) August 25, 2018 Here's another look at the play that earned Lewis the week two honor. <iframe width='640' height='480' frameborder='0' allowfullscreen src='//cdn2.trb.tv/iframe.html?ec=QwOWQyZzE6Sa7r7XVVXs50V86CBvJiMN&pbid=eb6ba12b8e8a4e72b590a076c86d82fe&pcode=A5YjUyOju0deP9y9BK28b-61JYT5'></iframe></image:caption>

<image:title>Videos - Ben Davis' Two-Sport Giant</image:title>
<image:caption>Posted 11:05 AM, August 23, 2018, by Larra Overton, Updated at 11:09AM, August 23, 2018 When Dawand Jones trots onto the field, it’s impossible not to notice. “When you look at just his sheer stature, he’s going to draw attention to himself,” Jason Simmons, Ben David head football coach, said. “Seventh grade year, I was 6’1”, 8th grade 6’3”, freshman year I grew to 6’5”, sophomore year 6’6”, and how I’m 6 8”, 6’9” almost,” Jones explained. As a rapidly growing adolescent, classmates teased Dawand about his size, which he used as motivation. “I just started soaking it up and I put that anger into my game and just started turning it on. I just have a different motor than most people,” the offensive lineman said. Dawand's imposing 6'8," 350-pound frame coupled with raw athleticism first made him a powerhouse on the court for the Giants. "You know it's one thing to be big but it's another to put it to use like Dawand does,” Simmons said. And now he's taken those size 19 cleats one step further in just his second season of organized football. "There aren't many people that are built like him that can do the things that he does and when you look at what he does on the basketball court, whether it's on film or in person that's starting to show and translate out here,” Simmons said of Dawand’s football potential. “That's what makes him special besides the fact he's a great kid, he's also becoming a really good football player.” Dawand is fielding division one interest both in football and in basketball, so it seems he will have his options when it comes to the end of his senior season but for him his top priority is on getting an education. "I really like accounting, these guys at Ben Davis have really helped me out these past three years. I'll probably take accounting or some type of business course. I really like money and entrepreneurship,” Dawand explained. And he's determined to use the opportunity at the next level, but academically and athletically to take care of the two most important people in his life. "My mom and my grandma, I’m just trying to get them a big house one day hopefully."</image:caption>

<image:title>Videos - Colts Celebrate 35th Season In Indy</image:title>
<image:caption>Posted 12:04 PM, August 21, 2018, by Larra Overton, Updated at 08:16PM, August 21, 2018 As Colts celebrate 35th season in Indy, those that moved with the team recall Baltimore departure When the Colts packed up the Mayflower trucks and rolled out of Baltimore, then-administrative assistant Pete Ward was one of the few who knew. "Jim Irsay told me late in the day of the move, 'My dad says we are moving to Indianapolis tonight. Go home, get your personal life in order and be back here in a couple of hours because there will be 14 trucks coming into our complex,’” Ward recalled. The snowy, middle-of-the-night move is one the now-Colts chief operating officer remembers well. "It was an adrenaline-filled night, a lot of mixed emotions because we were leaving a lot of great fans behind, but we were coming to a city that was so excited about getting an NFL team and Indianapolis welcomed us with open arms." Barry Krauss was a first-round pick of the Baltimore Colts, and although there had long been rumors of a move, he didn't know until the following day. "I called Jim Irsay because I was the alternate player rep,” the former linebacker explained. “I said, ‘Jimmy, what’s going on? Did the team move?’” “And he goes, ‘Yes, it did.’ And I said, ‘Well, what am I going to do? I have a house here.’ And he said, ‘If you want a job, you better find a way to Indianapolis.’” Then-Mayor Bill Hudnut was there to welcome those Mayflower trucks with open arms. For those players who made the move with the team, like Krauss, an introduction to Indy in the form of a packed and pristine Hoosier Dome was all the Hoosier homecoming they needed. "We walk out there on stage and there are 15,000 people there,” Krauss recalled. “And Bob Irsay comes up and Mayor Hudnut, everybody's like pumped up and I’m like this is great I’m so excited, because it isn't working in Baltimore." And the franchise celebrates 35 years in Indy, it has long surpassed its Baltimore tenure. "The interesting thing, we have been here now 35 years and we were in Baltimore for 31 years, so we have actually been here longer than the franchise was ever in Baltimore,” Ward explained. "Thirty-five years from now, I hope we are sitting here again talking about it."</image:caption>

<image:title>Videos - Robotic Tackling Dummy New Brebeuf Football "MVP"</image:title>
<image:caption>Posted 7:24 PM, August 9, 2018, by Larra Overton, Updated at 07:42PM, August 9, 2018 Robotic tackling dummy reducing football injuries for Brebeuf football program “We are definitely seeing the push for coaches to reinvent themselves or reinvent the game so it’s safer during practice,” Mic Roessler, Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory head football coach, said. And that’s how one of the newest inventions in football is one of Brebeuf’s most valuable players. It’s called the MVP, the mobile virtual player. The team has nicknamed the robot, “Rudy.”“We have always had a little bit of a challenge with our numbers so we had to be creative and think of drills that were safe but yet were teaching a good form of tackling and so this came about,” Roessler explained. A coach uses a remote control to maneuver the robotics tackling dummy and replicate in-game scenarios during practice drills. “It’s kind of changing the game,” Roessler admitted. “You used to have these big dummies that as you see we’ve got on the field, but this can act as a quarterback in a pass blocking drill for the defensive linemen to rush it and try to chase it down and get ahold of it. So, it’s really endless you just have to be imaginative when coming up wit different situations that would be like a game situation.” It also limits the amount of hits players are taking, which is in turn reducing common football injuries, like concussions. “A lot of times concussions don’t happen by somebody tackling somebody,” Roessler explained. “It’s when they hit the ground. Getting hit front on and then getting hit against the groupd going backwards, that’s where I have seen a lot of concussions and by having this, we’ve seen our practice injuries go way down.” “Usually we kind of slow down so we don’t injure any guys in practice or go full speed in practice,” Brebeuf senior Simon Banks said. “So, I really like Rudy because we can go full speed all the time and it’s kind of fun to hit and have move around so it’s definitely an advantage.” Having a nearly 200-pound robot that clocks a five second 40 yard dash not only makes practice more innovative, it also makes things more interesting. “Oh it makes it a lot of fun,” Banks said with a smile. “You definitely have to stay on your toes because Rudy seems to sneak up on guys and we don’t always see him coming.” “Coaches seem to like it just as much as the kids do,” Banks added with a laugh. And with a new season on the horizon, maximizing the effectiveness of practices while also protecting the player is top priority. “I have challenged our coaches to be more creative and to create game-like drills instead of just going through the motions,” Roessler said. “And this allows us to put a live thing or a live body involved in the drill, so it does increase the intensity of the drill and you’re always looking for things like that to make your practice more worthwhile.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Videos - Colts Use MLB Social Media to Educate Players</image:title>
<image:caption>Posted 5:30 PM, August 3, 2018, by Larra Overton, Updated at 07:09PM, August 3, 2018 Public apologies from professional athletes have become all too common in recent weeks, as Major League Baseball players Josh Hader, Trea Turner and Sean Newcomb all had offensive tweets they posted as teenagers brought to light years later, causing controversy. “Once your name becomes stained, whether it’s through social media or how it may be, it’s tough to repair that. Your reputation is really at stake,” Colts Director of Player Engagement David Thornton said. FOX59 sat down with Thornton, a former player himself, about how he uses this as an opportunity to advise the 90 guys currently on the team’s training camp roster. “I think it’s more customized for each guy, may be a guy does need a fresh slate and start a whole new account or maybe a guy just needs some tips on some things he should consider changing,” Thornton said. “Think about your tweets and does it align with your own personal identity, does it align with who you are now as an NFL athlete.” Public apologies from professional athletes have become all too common in recent weeks, as Major League Baseball players Josh Hader, Trea Turner and Sean Newcomb all had offensive tweets they posted as teenagers brought to light years later, causing controversy. “Once your name becomes stained, whether it’s through social media or how it may be, it’s tough to repair that. "Any time you have a guy who is a credible player who has had success on and off the field, I think he's a voice that's worthy of us listening to,” Thornton said of Witten. “Just the tips and the guidelines that Jason Witten offered to professional athletes, I thought were great. They were very insightful, they were helpful and whenever we have opportunities to teach our guys from resources such as that I like to share that with our guys. So they are aware of those commandments, the ‘do’s and the don'ts,’ that Jason Witten offered, they were simple, clear and had a positive intent behind it." Thornton also explained that vetting players' social media is something the organization does thoroughly in its evaluation of a player and his character. "It’s really important for us to dive in and see who are we bringing into our locker room to hopefully be an investment that is going to help our team improve, rather than a risk." Thornton also sees this as an opportunity to educate young athletes on the importance of being mindful with social media activity. "If you are using social media whether it's Twitter or Instagram or Facebook, really just think, just think before you press send, is this something that my family would be proud of, is this something that down the road I would be okay with anyone reading about me because once you press send, there's no retrieving that information."</image:caption>

<image:title>Videos - Colts Fans Vacation At Training Camp</image:title>
<image:caption>Posted 5:25 PM, July 27, 2018, by Larra Overton, Updated at 06:44PM, July 27, 2018 Colts fans trek from Maryland to Indiana, dedicating family vacation to training camp WESTFIELD, Ind. – Sharing a love of Colts football with fellow fans is what brought the Mallery family from Maryland to Indiana for their first training camp experience. “This is a family atmosphere, that’s why I love the team so much, its faith and family,” Bryan Mallery explained. “It brings people together with one common interest.” Each year, Bryan and his wife, Lisa, travel to several Colts games throughout the season, and this year decided to make the eight-hour road trip with their 5-year-old daughter Mckenzie and dedicate their family vacation to the Colts Training Camp experience. “We have done a lot of things but we just enjoy Colts football together. She wasn’t much of an NFL fan before we got married but she’s adapted and she has a passion just like I do now,” Bryan said of his wife. “It’s just a good experience to spend time with family and other Colts fans and we get to share this together and we got to meet the players and I never expected that,” Lisa explained. The family had already collected many autographs, including Andrew Luck, Adam Vinatieri and Malik Hooker. Despite being from Maryland, Bryan says the team’s previous connection to Baltimore didn’t affect his passion for the Colts. “I was born in ’85 they moved in ’84 so it didn’t make a difference to me,” he said of the team’s departure from Baltimore. “I mean you do still get a little bit of a response when you go down there for the ravens games about it and you try not to flash it too much.” Bryan and Lisa are members of the Western Maryland Blue Brigade, a Colts fan club. They credit social media for introducing them to many of the Colts fans they’re hanging out with during this training camp. “It all started on Facebook,” Bryan admitted of the friendships he formed with central Indiana-based Colts fans years ago. “People just with a common interest getting together, everybody just took us in like family and it just motivates us to come back every year.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Colts tight end ties the knot 11 days before training camp Posted 5:35 PM, July 26, 2018, by Larra Overton, Updated at 07:48PM, July 26, 2018 Stepping onto the field as a Colt for the first time in training camp isn’t the only thing Eric Eebron is smiling about after a packed month of July. “Well, I trained a lot and me and my fiancée, now wife, got married, so that was great,” Ebron said with a smile. “We had a super dope hip-hop violinist named Damien Escobar that kicked off the wedding, my family, her family, just a small group of very personal people and it just was amazing.” Soon after signing with the Colts in March, the tight end proposed and the couple decided to squeeze in a wedding in a narrow offseason window. "Two months it took us, and it was amazing for two months planning,” Ebron explained of the nuptials which took place in his wife’s hometown of Houston. “The thought was initially to push it to next year, but then we thought, ‘Why?’ We live together, we have a child, we act like we are married so why not get married, so, we did it." Proposing to and marrying his wife, Gabriela, wasn't the only courtship Ebron was involved in this offseason. Immediately after he was released by the Lions, Frank Reich began pursuing Ebron as the perfect partner to the revamped Colts offense. "I'm very excited because when I was released, Frank, Nick, Tom, our offensive coordinator and tight ends coach, they were one of the first people to call me and they wanted me to be a part of what they were building,” Ebron said. “So for them to want me, it was just such a wake-up call to me to know what I am capable of and what I can do to help the team." Ebron is embracing this new chapter, both personally and professionally. "This is a whole new start for me, this is a whole new everything, and it's all been positive and I just hope to continue it."</image:caption>

<image:caption>Colts partner with local law enforcement to host youth football clinic Posted 5:12 PM, July 25, 2018, by Larra Overton, Updated at 06:44PM, July 25, 2018 WESTFIELD, Ind. – The Colts opened training camp with some additional playmakers on hand. “You know it’s a great way to start off camp, getting a lot of completions out there,” quarterback Jacoby Brissett said with a smile. “Getting my spirits up right now, so that’s a good thing.” On Wednesday, the franchise partnered with police officers from across central Indiana to host a football camp for 100 local kids. “You know we are all kids and you see a lot of these kids coming out here and a lot of these people just coming out here having fun and smiling and playing football,” Brissett said. Plenty of smiles shared between the players and the kids throughout the day, as well as the opportunity for the officers to flex their skills and find common ground on the field. "Well it helps us be able to communicate and relate, everyone can relate to football and there's a lot of chatter going on out here,” linebacker John Simon said. “We have to communicate with them to make sure, they're going through the drills right, so I think that relationship is really building." This Colts Youth Clinic at Grand Park was not only an opportunity for young football players to get some hands on work with players and test out their skills but also to learn from local law enforcement in a fun environment. "Trying to change the perception is what you do,” Major Mike Jefferson, IMPD community engagement unit commander, explained. “You have to get next to these kids when they're young and that way they go out on the street and hear different things about police, they can say, hey that wasn't my experience and that may change some attitudes and change some minds."</image:caption>

<image:caption>Former Colt Marlin Jackson a champion for local neighborhoods with latest project Posted 3:56 PM, July 17, 2018, by Larra Overton, Updated at 03:57PM, July 17, 2018 Marlin Jackson's latest project is building on his work within schools in some of Indy's underserved neighborhoods. "I thought about when they go home and how can I influence and affect the community that they live and the area that their growing up,” Jackson said of his Fight For Life Foundation. That's when the Super Bowl champion broke ground on the concept of revive construction group, partnering with Scott Blyze, who was drawn to the project after a career in commercial construction and development. "What this does is, this energizes me in the fact that I get to build something where it's going to make a difference in someone else's life,” Blyze explained. The progress being made at these two sites on Graceland Avenue near 38th Street are the product of Revive's efforts with Indianapolis Neighborhood Housing Partnership. "As far as the order of this project, it’s INHP at the top, they're funding the project, and then you have Near North Development Corporation which is the developer,” the former Colt said. “So we are the builder, Revive Construction Group working for Near North Development Group." This site in the Crown Hill neighborhood is the first of a number of properties that Revive Construction Group will develop over the next five years to not only revitalize local neighborhoods like this one but to also create responsible home owners in the community. "The vision is really to merge real estate development with social service,” Jackson said. “Through Revive Property Group we are going to build duplexes, rental units, but within those units, we will prepare people to actually own a home." The impact will happen quickly, as these homes are set to be complete in the fall. "We look forward to seeing the family that takes over the keys to this home once we finish it,” Jackson said.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Hoosier homecoming even sweeter for new IU baseball coach Jeff Mercer Posted 5:31 PM, July 16, 2018, by Larra Overton, Updated at 04:19PM, July 17, 2018 BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The chance to oversee the program he long admired is one of a lifetime for Jeff Mercer. “As a player, growing up locally I always wanted to have an opportunity to play at Indiana and I wasn’t good enough as a player,” the former Wright State first baseman said. “So getting into coaching, ultimately I wanted to be good enough to have a chance to come back and lead this program.” It’s a homecoming for Mercer, who grew up in Bargersville, the oldest of four boys, and as a kid has memories of the old Sembower Field when his dad was a Hoosiers’ assistant. “Growing up watching my dad coach here, seeing where the program has come from Sembower Field to here and the facilities and the investment, and now to bring those things together and to hopefully culminate in championships and advance ourselves in the tournament really is a special feeling and opportunity.” It's been a whirlwind two weeks for the Mercer family. The day after interviewing in Bloomington, the former Wright State head coach rushed back to Dayton to bring home his son from the NICU decked out proudly in cream and crimson. "The day I was on the interview my wife calls and says, 'They just said that we are going to bring home Grady tomorrow,' and I said, ‘Hang on, yesterday they said it was going to be two weeks,’” Mercer explained. Grady was born June 20, six weeks early. “It was a bit crazy, but we were also very fortunate to be able to have him come home a couple weeks early and obviously the job. There wasn't a lot of sleep. My phone died like three times that day. I had 450 text messages that day and like 30 voice mails, so it was an exciting time." With Grady coming home coinciding with his own Hoosier homecoming, the new father already looks forward to making more father-son memories in a new era of Indiana baseball. “I do look forward to bringing my son on the field and playing catch and I do look forward to taking him hunting and fishing and doing a lot of the things that my dad did with me and being able to do it here at home is more than I ever could have hoped or wished for."</image:caption>
